The Role We are seeking a motivated Trainee Field Technician/Hydrographer to join our Mackay-based North Queensland Operations team. This rare trainee opportunity offers hands-on experience, formal qualifications, and one-on-one mentoring to launch your career in hydrography. You will learn how to install, maintain, and operate environmental monitoring stations, collect high-quality data, and support a range of water monitoring projects. As part of your development, you'll complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography) and gain industry-recognised training including 4WD and advanced first aid. The Day to Day Assist in delivering best-practice environmental monitoring services. Support the installation, servicing, and maintenance of automatic environmental monitoring stations. Collect and verify environmental data using specialist software. Maintain accurate field records, observations, and calibrations. Help measure water flow in rivers, creeks, and drains. Assist with manual sampling from surface water and groundwater. Travel to remote regions of Queensland for short weekday trips. The Essentials Interest in environmental monitoring, sampling, or hydrographic work Qualification in environmental science, water resources, or similar (desirable) Good organisational skills and attention to detail Willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions Ability to work well in a team and take guidance from mentors Manual driver's licence (4WD experience desirable) Ability to swim Eligible to enrol in the Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography) Working at ALS Our people drive our success at ALS.
