We are seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Senior Linux Engineer to join our team within the Data and Digital Group. This role is focused on supporting non-production environments and enabling application development and support teams through the design, implementation, and maintenance of Linux computing platforms. As part of a team of environment technical specialists, you will apply best practices in automation and configuration management using Ansible to build and maintain a secure and efficient Linux Standard Operating Environment (SOE). You will be accountable for the strategic delivery and operational integrity of Linux infrastructure supporting critical development and testing environments. This includes responsibility for system performance, cost optimisation, compliance, and alignment with enterprise-wide technical standards. The role requires innovative problem-solving to address complex infrastructure challenges, including the design of novel automation solutions and the resolution of systemic issues affecting multiple platforms and teams. To be successful in this role, you will bring: • Proven experience and authoritative expertise in Linux system administration and engineering, particularly in non-production environments. • Strong proficiency in Ansible and other automation frameworks. • Solid understanding of security principles and experience developing and implementing secure Linux SOEs delivering on enterprise technical strategy. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team and engage with stakeholders across diverse technical and business domains. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: 1. Design, build, and maintain Linux environments to support development, testing, and pre-production activities. 2. Develop and maintain enterprise-grade automation frameworks using Ansible, setting reusable standards and practices adopted across multiple teams and projects. 3. Apply security best practices including system hardening, encryption, certificate management, and compliance controls including through development and maintenance of a Red Hat Enterprise Linux SOE. 4. Lead and be accountable for the implementation of architectural technical direction, ensuring infrastructure solutions meet strategic objectives, risk management requirements, and compliance obligations. 5. Monitor system performance and proactively identify areas for improvement or automation. 6. Lead the investigation and resolution of complex, high-impact infrastructure issues, including those with ambiguous causes or cross-system dependencies. Apply advanced diagnostic techniques and develop innovative solutions that improve system resilience and reduce future risk. 7. Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and operational practices. 8. Participate in environment planning and capacity management to support evolving project needs. 9. Contribute to the formulation of agency-wide technical policies and standards related to Linux infrastructure, automation, and security compliance. 10. Provide authoritative oversight of infrastructure-related risks, including mitigation planning and escalation of critical issues to senior leadership. 11. Design and implement scalable, secure, and resilient Linux infrastructure solutions that support a wide range of applications and operational contexts, including integration with cloud, containerisation, and CI/CD pipelines. 12. Collaborate with architecture, cybersecurity, and application teams to align infrastructure capabilities with evolving business and technical requirements across the Bureau. 13. Drive continuous improvement by identifying systemic inefficiencies and designing strategic solutions that enhance automation, security, and performance across the Bureau's infrastructure landscape. 14. Facilitate cooperation across multi-disciplinary teams-including cybersecurity, architecture, and application development-to ensure integrated and consensus-driven infrastructure outcomes.
