Who we are The Plant Sciences and Risk Assessment Branch within the Plant Division develops science-based import policies that protect Australia's plant-based industries, the natural environment and the community from exotic plant pests and diseases. The branch also provides scientific and technical submissions that help to maintain, improve and open overseas export markets for Australian plants and plant products. The Pest Evaluation, Scientific and Technical Information (PESTI) team conducts technical assessments of pests and their plant biosecurity risks, develops guidelines and instructional materials, and provides expert scientific and technical advice to support departmental operations and stakeholders. PESTI collaborates with the Biosecurity Integrated Information System (BIIS) team to enhance key digital platforms that capture, manage and share pest data and assessments, including the Pest and Disease Repository (PDR) and the Biosecurity Assessment Recording System (BARS). The team also coordinates technical requests and supports BIIS-related change management and training. The Job The duties of the role include, but are not limited to: • managing the transition of data from legacy systems to new databases • acquiring and transforming data from a range of sources using programming languages such as R and SQL • converting unstructured to structured data, providing quality checks and data curation • supporting the validation and quality assurance process for the team’s output • contributing to briefings and reports, as required • using different data sources to respond to data queries and to produce visualisations, presentations and reports • designing and implementing measures to improve data management • documenting methods and processes with a focus on repeatability and consistency, as required • working closely with technical and scientific teams to ensure data-related business requirements are understood and met • maintaining and updating a relational data model in PowerBI to serve data extraction needs in bulk from a database, as required • developing and maintaining relationships with other data practitioners across the division and organisation • engaging professionally with a range of internal and external stakeholders and providing sound technical advice on biosecurity data and related issues. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience • Proven experience using R and SQL programming languages to interrogate complex data sets. • Demonstrated experience using Power BI for data visualisation as well as Microsoft Excel. • Experience developing new IT systems (including workflow, data storage and analysis) is desirable but not mandatory. • Experience working in an Agile environment and being responsive to change. • Experience with Azure DevOps or other similar project managing tools for coordinating and tracking delivery of a work program is desirable but not mandatory. • Experience or knowledge of training and change management as it relates to IT based business support. • Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, biosecurity related concepts. • Knowledge of the plant biosecurity system, including the department’s relevant policy and regulatory frameworks is desirable but not mandatory.
