About our team The Illicit Tobacco Taskforce (ITTF) was established on 1 July 2018. The Taskforce is responsible for the protection of Commonwealth revenue through proactive investigation, targeting, and disruption of serious actors and organised crime syndicates involved in the illicit tobacco trade, including disrupting their global supply chains. We are an Australian Border Force (ABF)-led Taskforce that draws on the expertise and advanced capabilities of the ABF, the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP). Specifically, the ABF ITTF includes a Strategy, Coordination, Research and Reporting Team as well as Operational Jurisdictional Strike Teams of ABF Investigators targeting the importation of illicit tobacco by identified Priority Illicit Tobacco Networks. The current footprint of the ABF ITTF includes officers based in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Our ideal candidate We are looking for confident, adaptable candidates who excel in high-tempo operational environments and can quickly learn and apply new skills. You will work alongside investigators to disrupt and prosecute serious organised crime networks engaged in illicit tobacco activities. You will bring: A strong work ethic, professional integrity, and high emotional intelligence Well-developed written and verbal communication skills The ability to work under limited direction in a small, high-performing team A willingness to contribute across multiple work streams within the Section and Branch Previous operational experience in core ABF functions such as Cargo, Supply Chain, Maritime, or Field Operations (or similar) Knowledge and experience with Intelligence or cargo related systems. Additional Information To be eligible, you must meet the requirements for a Border Force Officer, including: Maintaining relevant medical, fitness, and psychometric standards Making an oath or affirmation to uphold integrity, honesty, and the trust placed in you Actively participating in career management, including postings and deployments Regular domestic travel may be required, sometimes at short notice You may need to obtain and maintain a Use of Force qualification. The key duties of the position include Support investigations and enforcement activities aimed at disrupting the flow of illicit tobacco into Australia Analyse persons of interest, cargo, and supply chains, and operationalise responses to mitigate risk and address potential offences Apply relevant legislation and policy to investigative planning, compliance, and project delivery Deliver accurate, high-quality information to ABF stakeholders and partner agencies in line with information-sharing protocols Stay informed about new and emerging intelligence products, and monitor current trends, risks, and threats Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including law enforcement and intelligence partners Ability to travel domestically.
