The key duties of the position include The Role Defence Digital Group (DDG) is responsible for shaping, delivering and sustaining an integrated and scalable ICT environment, the Single Information Environment (SIE), to enable Defence to fight and win in the digital age. The DDG Engineering Branch is responsible for providing and applying technological principles to create, manage, and maintain digital systems and infrastructure in a scaled agile framework (SAFe). Our aim is to reduce the complexity and remove legacy systems to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance agility. DDG is seeking highly experienced Application Engineers to play a critical role in managing and modernising the multitude of business applications that underpin our organisation's mission. You will design modern, secure, and scalable application solutions aligned with our digital strategy and enterprise architecture, ensuring application integrity, data quality, and system interoperability. The Department will be creating merit pools to fill vacancies across the Organisation over the next 18 months. This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team You will be part of a team of ICT professionals delivering complex projects across key Digital domains in both the Military and Enterprise Systems Divisions within Defence Digital Group (DDG). These roles will provide technical expertise, mentorship and coaching in a matrixed construct, as teams and individuals are embedded into projects as needed. As a Digital Engineer in DDG, you may either: Lead a team of ICT professionals experienced in key technology platforms/products, or Work individually on projects as the technical engineering SME. Our Ideal Candidate As the Applications Engineer, you will: Have proven experience as an Application Engineer, Solution Designer, or similar role managing large-scale application portfolios. Lead the design and implementation of application solutions across cloud, hybrid, and on-prem environments. Lead technical discussions, architectural reviews, and decision-making forums. Mentor staff and guide solution delivery teams. Analyse and document application and data architectures, workflows, and interdependencies. Develop high-level and detailed solution designs that align with enterprise standards and security frameworks and have strong capability in application integration techniques and platform interoperability. Develop a deep understanding of Defence's application landscape - including core business systems, supporting tools, and legacy platforms - and how these systems integrate, share data, and support end-to-end business processes. Maintain a central knowledge base of application capabilities, interdependencies, data flows, and integration points to support strategic planning, change impact assessments, and system upgrades. Work closely with business stakeholders, ICT engineers, solution architects, and vendors to shape the technical design of new and existing applications.
