About us AGS is the Australian Government's central legal practice and part of the Attorney-General's Department. AGS helps Commonwealth clients to manage legal issues, navigate new challenges and find legal solutions which support the work of the Australian Government. Drawing on an exceptional depth of experience and expertise, we assist the Australian Government in the development and implementation of solutions to legal issues that have national importance. AGS is diverse. With offices in every capital city and a team of 800 staff, including over 576 lawyers, we work in more than 40 different areas of law related to government. About the role The Dispute Resolution (DR) practice provides specialist expertise in resolving and managing disputes across many areas of law. It acts for regulatory agencies in enforcing the law, protects sensitive information from disclosure, defends government decisions, assists royal commissions and responds to claims made against the Commonwealth. It is often involved in the largest and most sensitive matters affecting the Australian Government. The Deputy Chief Solicitor Specialist (DCSS) is a new role in AGS. The successful applicant will be a recognised leading expert in specific areas of law and, together with our Chief Counsel, Chief Solicitor and National Leader, will have responsibility for providing strategic leadership in their area of practice and leading a geographically dispersed team. There are 3 positions available in the following practice areas: DR Review - which includes merits and judicial review, administrative law, privacy and FOI, employment, WHS and industrial issues DR Monetary Claims - which includes tort, commercial and insolvency litigation, statutory compensation schemes, personal injury matters and native title DR Security and Enforcement - which includes our national security and law enforcement practice. DCSS will be responsible for developing legal expertise and capability through effective leadership, supervision, building client relationships and improving service delivery. The role operates at a strategic level, under limited direction and with significant level of professional independence. The successful applicant will need to possess the following skills and attributes: extensive legal experience (including at senior executive level or partner level) in the areas of practice referred to above a deep understanding of the Commonwealth legal environment recognition as an expert in their area of practice exceptional legal and strategic skills in matters of key significance to Government highly developed persuasive skills in written and oral advocacy substantial experience in negotiating with senior stakeholders in the sensitive and significant Government or business issues proven ability to contribute to significant business winning activities a demonstrated track-record of leadership and supervision of practitioners at all levels excellent professional judgement and interpersonal skills.
