The Trans-Tasman IP Attorneys Board (the Board) administers the regulatory and disciplinary regimes for patent attorneys in Australia and New Zealand (NZ), and trade marks attorneys in Australia. The Board is established under section 227A of the Patents Act 1990 (Cth) (the Patents Act), and consists of: Chairperson (rotating between a person from Australia and a person from NZ) the Director General of IP Australia the NZ Commissioner of Patents at least 2 NZ representatives of the patent attorney profession, and between 2 and 5 other members. The Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest from persons who wish to be considered to serve on the Board as members. By setting the knowledge requirements and qualifications for professionals, accrediting relevant tertiary education providers and upholding ethical standards, the Board plays a crucial role in shaping the profession today and ensuring it can respond effectively to current challenges and emerging issues in the IP ecosystem. The key duties of the position include The Trans-Tasman IP Attorney regulation regime, which covers patent attorneys in Australia and NZ, and trade mark attorneys in Australia, is an important mechanism of assuring the availability, quality, expertise and ethical standards of its members, who provide intellectual property (IP) advice and services to users of the IP system. Board members are responsible for carrying out the Board's functions under the Patents Act including assessing the qualifications and knowledge required for registration as a Trans-Tasman patent attorney or Australian trade marks attorney, and maintaining the standards of professional conduct applicable to the profession. Board members are accountable to the Australian Minister for Industry and Science and the NZ Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
