RESIDENT RETURN VISA (RRV) FOR NEW ZEALAND CITIZENS

If you’re a New Zealander who once held Australian permanent residency or citizenship but let it lapse or gave it up, the Resident Return Visa (RRV) might help you get back on track.

What is the RRV?

The Resident Return Visa (subclass 155 or 157) allows former Australian permanent residents or citizens to re-enter and live in Australia as permanent residents.

Who’s It For?

You may be eligible if:

  • You previously held permanent residency in Australia.
  • You lost or gave up your Australian citizenship and want to return long-term.
  • You’ve spent at least 2 years (in total) as a permanent resident in the last 5 years — or you can show strong ties to Australia.

How to Apply

  1. Check your previous visa or citizenship history.
You’ll need evidence that you were once a permanent resident or citizen.
  2. Apply online via the Department of Home Affairs.
Choose either the subclass 155 (if you meet the residence requirement) or subclass 157 (if you don’t but have compelling reasons). Apply.
  3. Provide supporting documents.
This might include your travel history, ID, and proof of ties to Australia (like family, work, or assets).
  4. Wait for a decision.
Some applications are processed in days, others may take weeks.

Once granted, the RRV lets you return to Australia and resume your path toward citizenship or long-term residency.
