The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government's primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety. Our purpose is to protect the Australian people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, through understanding risks, best practice regulation, research, policy, services, partnerships and engaging with the community. The Monitoring and Emergency Response Section is responsible for ARPANSA's laboratories, field measurement capabilities and networks that are required for the measurement of ionising and non-ionising radiation in people and the environment. This includes maintenance of ARPANSA's radiation emergency response capabilities and networks and laboratories under national and international arrangements. Why work for us? The key duties of the position include In this role, you will work under limited direction and perform a range of complex tasks associated with operating and maintaining Australia's radionuclide air monitoring and noble gas stations that form part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) International Monitoring System (IMS). You will also take a lead role in developing and maintaining the UV Index (UVI) monitoring systems and other complex gamma radiation monitoring networks. You will be the technical lead providing maintenance and development support for hardware and software associated with the radionuclide monitoring systems. You will be working as part of a small team, delivering high quality and timely data to the CTBT International Data Centre (IDC). In this role, you will be responsible for preparing reports as well as establishing and maintaining a high degree of documentation management and record keeping. This role will also require a substantial amount of travel, both international and domestic, including leading trips to remote locations. Key accountabilities Under limited direction and using established principles, practices and procedures, undertake a range of complex tasks associated with the ongoing development and operation of Australia's CTBT air monitoring and noble gas stations. Under reasonable autonomy and accountability, lead the maintenance and upgrading of station equipment, relating to the operation of CTBT air monitoring stations including field work. Maintain, in conjunction with the Digital Services Section, software relating to Radiation Monitoring Network station operations. Liaise with operational and technical staff from organisations contracted to assist with the running of the CTBT air monitoring stations. Develop technical procedural documents.
