The Bureau's National Observing Operations section maintains a meteorological office at Lord Howe Island. We are seeking an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to undertake a six month posting as the Officer in Charge of the Lord Howe Island meteorological office. This is an unaccompanied position, the successful applicant will be provided with a fully furnished house on Lord Howe Island which includes electricity, gas and internet, a vehicle is also provided for use on the Island. The successful applicant will be expected to depart for Lord Howe Island mid January 2026. Lord Howe Island is located 700km northeast of Sydney and has a population of 380 local residents. The island and its surrounds are World Heritage Listed, and the waters encompass the world's southernmost Coral Reef. It is also home to an abundance of wildlife including many endangered species of birds. The Lord Howe Island Meteorological Office is a single person station and the OIC is responsible for managing the daily operation of the weather station including Aviation Weather Observations, surface observations, instrument maintenance as well as loading and monitoring the Automatic Meteorological Balloon Launching System (AMBLS) to deliver the upper air program. The position involves a range of engagement with both internal and external stakeholders such as Property Services, Forecasters, Aviation industry, Contractors, Lord Howe Island Board, local community groups and tourists. The key duties of the position include Observations & Operations: Undertake observations from a variety of meteorological equipment and systems primarily supporting the Aviation Weather Observations, Upper Air and Surface Observations networks. Document and maintain associated records. Ensure data quality standards are adhered to and perform routine and detailed operational diagnostics Complete all supplementary reporting and stocktaking, as required to maintain the program. Asset and Service Management: Support a strong asset management culture and consistent usage of enterprise asset management system (Maximo) to accurately record asset information, asset performance and issue stakeholder communication. Documentation & Record Keeping: Prepare operational reports and associated documentation. Undertake administrative tasks such as finance reconciliations, WHSE auditing, inventory records, stores and stock control. Travel: Travel to Lord Howe Island will be by aircraft with the plane departing from Sydney. Travel may also be required to undertake pre departure training. A local station vehicle is provided for travel around the Island Supervision: contractor management onsite will be required Engagement and Representation: Engage with internal and external stakeholders as a representative of the Bureau of Meteorology including Property Services, Forecasters, Aviation Industry, Lord Howe Island Board, community members and tourists, in accordance with Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct. Quality Management: Participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 quality management Standard. Other Relevant Duties: Undertake Scientific projects for other organisations as approved by the Bureau of Meteorology.
