The Bureau's National Observing Operations section maintains a year-round staff presence at the Norfolk Island Meteorological office. We are seeking an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person, ideally with previous field office and Supervisor experience to undertake a posting at Norfolk Island for approximately 6 months as part of a team of two. The successful applicant will commence at Norfolk Island Late February 2026. We are also seeking applicants interested in applying for the August 2026 deployment. This position is an unaccompanied position and accommodation for the successful applicant will be provided on Norfolk Island. The Norfolk Island TO3 Officer in Charge (OIC) is responsible for undertaking and managing the program of Service at Norfolk Island which includes, Upper Air Observations, Aviation Observations, Surface Observations, Instrument maintenance and data quality monitoring. They will liaise with the relevant lead in the Sydney Hub if any technical issues arise. The OIC will also be responsible for liaising with property services if maintenance of the property is required and may be required to manage contractors onsite. The OIC will take pride in developing and mentoring staff. Strong teamwork abilities ensure you can empower and inspire the team you will be working with. You will also ensure that all staff on station adhere to workplace health and safety policies and procedures and local safety operating procedures relevant to station activities. The OIC will liaise with the Remote Operations Lead North over any challenges, hazards, incidents or complications experienced on station. Where required, the Bureau will provide relevant training to successful applicants, this may involve travel to Melbourne or other locations prior to departure to Norfolk Island. The key duties of the position include Observations & Operations: Undertake observations from a variety of meteorological equipment and systems, primarily providing Upper Air, Surface and Aviation Observations. Document and maintain associated records and historical data. Ensure data quality standards are adhered to and perform routine and detailed operational diagnostics Complete all supplementary reporting and stocktaking, as required to maintain the program. Asset and Service Management: Support a strong asset management culture and consistent usage of the Bureau's enterprise asset management system (Maximo) to accurately record asset information, asset performance and issue stakeholder communication. Documentation & Record Keeping: Prepare operational reports and associated documentation. Undertake administrative tasks such as finance reconciliations, WHSE auditing, reconciliations, procurement, inventory records, stores and stock control. Supervision: Mentor, manage, supervise and develop staff. Maintain operational and station duty rosters. Travel: Travel to Norfolk Island will be by aircraft with the flights departing from Sydney or Brisbane. Travel may also be required to undertake pre departure training. Engagement and Representation: Engage with internal and external stakeholders as a representative of the Bureau of Meteorology in accordance with Australian Public Service Values and Code of Conduct. Quality Management: Participate in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of products and services and the ongoing development, implementation and continual improvement of the quality management system to achieve and maintain the ongoing certification of compliance with the ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard. Compliance: Comply with all relevant legislation, policies, procedures and guidance in the course of your work. Other network support activities might include coordinating network and asset inspection and liaising with Property service regarding any infrastructure maintenance required.
