This position is in the Data and Digital Group (Service & Infrastructure Management Program, Infrastructure Services Section). We are looking for a Senior Linux Engineer to support scientific and research environments along with our mission critical applications such as forecasting systems and Internet delivery systems. The successful applicant will join a team of Linux experts, mostly located in Melbourne, who harness best practice in building, configuring, securing and managing Linux computing environments. This existing position plays a vital role in optimising and automating the management of Linux Systems using advanced technologies. The role provides expert support for Linux platforms (approximately 1200) with a view to continuous service maturity. The occupant of this position engages with stakeholders and business partners to identify opportunities for improvement, drive technology change, achieve operational efficiencies, and integrate applications into production environments. To be successful you will: • Have a track record in advanced Linux and Unix technologies supporting development, test and highly available production environments, with a talent for aligning operational technologies with strategic goals. • Have experience with automation techniques including continuous delivery systems and rapid build, test and deployment systems. • Have experience with Identity and Access Management and Privileged Access Management systems. • Demonstrate security literacy, with expertise in system hardening, security monitoring, firewalls, proxies, intrusion detection systems, encryption, certificate management and other security practices. • Have experience working with Hybrid cloud environments; and • Have proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and engage effectively with users from a variety of work and business environments. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: 1. Maintain, monitor and optimise Linux technologies supporting scientific and research development, test and highly available production environments; 2. Participate in Linux systems integration, release, change and lifecycle management activities both on-premises and in cloud environments; 3. Ensure that business continuity and disaster recovery SLAs are satisfied by responding to system incidents, initiating appropriate corrective action, and by agreement participating in an out-of-hours on-call restriction roster; 4. Monitor, manage and continuously improve security policy compliance within Linux systems; 5. Provide expert advice on best practices in advanced Linux technologies and standards to IT support, development and management colleagues; 6. Comply with and maintain your knowledge of all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct; and 7. Be aware of and apply the principles and practices of the various elements of the Bureau's Social Justice Strategy.
