Pet friendly workplace Leave benefits including public holiday swap, gifted annual leave, and wellbeing leave Employee discounts and gym membership benefits Desired Skills and Experience The Role The Philanthropy Manager plays a key strategic role in growing fundraising income to expand the Black Dog Institute research and implementation programs all across Australia. This role is responsible for developing a targeted strategy to increase philanthropic giving in Sydney, NSW by deepening relationships with existing philanthropists and funding partners of the Black Dog Institute, supporting major donors events, and researching, applying and maintaining support from Trusts and Foundations. This is a relationship-based role, requiring a high degree of emotional intelligence, tact, compassion, empathy and professionalism, as well as an ability to inspire support for the Black Dog Institute. Duties & Responsibilities Strategic Oversight Significantly grow tied income and untied income in NSW and actively contribute to the annual budget and revenue forecast yearly. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the Black Dog Institute’s strategic priorities and funding needs, through strong collaboration with both Research and Service Implementation directorates to ensure key programs are funded. Work collaboratively with, and in support of, Funding and Partnerships Directorate team members, Senior Management, Foundation Directors, Board members and other internal stakeholders to steward and solicit donations for BDI research and programs. Work collaboratively with BDI Foundation to maximise members’ impact, utilising their connections to grow philanthropic giving. Provide high level strategic advice on funding and sector trends and identify opportunities to ensure the organisation is well-positioned to meet 5-years strategic goals. Existing Philanthropic Supporters Identify BDI’s current and lapsed major donors and develop appropriate engagement strategies, tailored communications, and ongoing stewardship for each, to grow or re-ignite their financial commitment to The Black Dog Institute. Collaborate with the Funding and Partnerships Directorate to engage philanthropists in broader fundraising activities, campaigns and appeals. Manage tailored communications via a number of methods including face to face meetings, phone calls, email and mail, as well as engage internal stakeholders and Board Members as needed, to ensure major donors continue to be aligned with and supportive of BDI’s work. Take the lead in ensuring all acknowledgement and reporting obligations to philanthropists are fulfilled and work with other team members as needed to acknowledge financial support and thank appropriately. Attend the Black Dog Institute’s Sydney-based annual events including but not limited to our Donors Thank You Event and BDI Research Showcase Prospective Philanthropic Supporters Build a pipeline of new prospect donors based primarily in Sydney, Australia and provide regular reporting to the Head of Philanthropy & Development sharing insights on the philanthropic sector in Sydney Research high net worth individuals, families, philanthropists, and foundations, and manage all aspects of the gift cycle through GEMS and Raiser Edge. Work closely with other F&P teams to develop journeys which ensure a healthy pipeline of donors into the philanthropy stream. Work with internal stakeholders, including Executive team and Board Members to ensure new philanthropists are identified, nurtured and stewarded toward substantial financial support of the Institute’s work. Coordinate Black Dog Institute Foundation events and activities as directed in Victoria and South Australia. Grant Writing Working with Research, Clinic, Service Engagement teams, and other internal stakeholders, manage, facilitate and lead writing, and submit compelling and tailored funding applications. Liaise with Research Development Support Team and collaborate with relevant teams to ensure all obligations to philanthropic funders are fulfilled including the submission of donor acquittal reports in a timely manner. Collaborate across the Black Dog Institute to tailor our communications and demonstrate the Institute’s real world impact to funders. Work with other team members as needed to acknowledge financial support on our website and annual report. Collaboration Keep up to date with the Black Dog Institute’s work, programs and funding priorities and be a key conduit to establishing funding priorities and ensuring key programs are funded. Work alongside team members in the Philanthropy & Development Team and in the Partnerships Team to maximise opportunities from the corporate and philanthropic sectors when developing proposals, pitches and updates. Collaborate with the Black Dog Institute employees to understand their budgets, resource requirements and areas of activity and plan proactive pitches or proposals accordingly and in ways that are appropriate to the needs and interests of potential philanthropists. Working in partnership with the Supporter Engagement Team to ensure appropriate collateral and/or support material is developed on time and within budget to communicate appropriately with philanthropists and funders. Skills & Experience Required 5 years’ experience in a similar role or a clearly demonstrated capacity to meet requirements of the role. Demonstrated well-developed network of philanthropic and high net worth contacts in Victoria and a track record of successful gift solicitation. Proven record in achieving revenue targets and income growth with confidence to make cold calls and unsolicited approaches to prospective donors. An established track record in writing successful funding applications and proposals. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, with a positive approach and with all levels of executive and management to influence strategy and program funding. Superb interpersonal skills and a proven ability to develop genuine long-term relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Strong influencing and networking skills with a proven ability to develop productive, results-focused relationships and inspire people to support a worthy cause. High level of personal initiative and resourcefulness with high attention to detail and a sound ability to think critically and strategically. Willing to travel interstate as needed and ability to work outside business hours occasionally. A high level of professionalism, ethics and integrity.
