The Bureau's Research Program sits within the Science and Innovation Group and is the main driver of science-based innovation in the Bureau of Meteorology. In supporting the Bureau to deliver impactful weather, climate, ocean and water information services, the research contributes to advancing meteorological and earth system sciences in Australia and globally. Research activities cover the broad fields of weather, climate, oceanography, earth systems modelling, data set development, process studies, and application development The Hydrological Modelling team of the Bureau's Research Program is seeking a talented and highly-motivated hydrological scientist with strong background in soil hydrology and land surface modelling. The successful candidate will undertake novel research into hydrological and land surface dynamics modelling for Australian conditions in an Earth System Modelling framework within the Hydrological Modelling team. This role will contribute to the improvement of soil hydrological processes in the land surface modelling for the future Australian water resources assessment and operational products. The Hydrologist is also expected to contribute to discussions on the definition and progression of the research program's main aims and will need to have: Demonstrated experience in land surface modelling with a particular focus on soil hydrology, and vegetation dynamics. Therefore, a strong knowledge of soil physics and hydrological processes across multiple spatial and temporal scales, in particular Australian soil and climate systems, is required. Experience in the evaluation of spatio-temporal data sets originating from models and observations. Flexibility to work effectively and productively as a member of a team under the direction of more senior scientists, and an ability to plan and undertake research and to publish research results. Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to write science papers, work plans, present work orally, and translate science outcomes in ways which can be understood by non-expert audiences. Good analytical and scientific programming skills, including experience with Linux (preferably in a high-performance computing environment), and with scientific and visualisation. The role involves close collaboration with scientific and technical staff across the Research Program, and with other Bureau employees and international stakeholders, requiring experience in liaising effectively with external stakeholders. The Hydrologist role in research is to support and lead research in select projects, and to interact with scientists and external research projects, working collaboratively with Bureau internal staff to deliver research to operations, and working with customers where required. Tasks include setting up, parameterising, and developing land surface models, to advance soil hydrological processes, such as infiltration, soil surface evaporation and surface ponding. Openness to collaborate across the Hydrology Sciences section and other teams within Research as well as Research to Operations teams is expected to increase the success of the project deliveries and operationalisation. The key duties of the position include Hydrologists are expected to spend their time engaging in research activities relevant to the Hydrological Modelling team's portfolio of research projects, including but not limited to: Undertake original research and associated development in hydrological/land surface modelling with a focus on soil and vegetation dynamic modelling, and hydrological applications, all of which to a standard allowing to publish results in peer-reviewed journals, technical or research reports with demonstrable impact for the Bureau. Deliver practical science-based solutions in response to identified customer or organisational needs, including supporting development of a fully coupled Earth System Model, which delivers greater impact and value from Bureau Services. Work with clients, sponsors, and stakeholders of the Bureau's Research Program to understand their needs, contribute to the development of proposals to address scientific and technical gaps, and drive innovation and scientific advancement with measurable impact and value. Provide scientific advice to Bureau leaders and senior scientists and support them in delivering Team and Section plans and priorities, where required. Commitment to the Bureau's core values and understanding of the Bureau's diversity and inclusion statement of commitment and the Bureau way. Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct. The current role will also support the technical lead in land surface modelling in all aspects relating to soil hydrology, vegetation dynamics and model evaluation and requires: Performing scientific investigations that successfully deliver improved Bureau land surface dynamics products and services, creating impact and value for customers. Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals, technical or research reports with demonstrable impact for the Bureau. Conduct JULES model development work related to soil hydrological processes with a particular focus on soil physics parameterisation and surface hydrology in collaboration with our key partners: UKMO and UK CEH. Support the transition to operationalise research models. Support more junior staff in expanding their skills, through training and mentoring, where applicable. A collaborative style to communicate across all teams in the Hydrology Sciences Section to support of Section and Program-wide objectives.
