Government Lawyer, Legal Services, reports to the Senior Government Lawyer and works within a multidisciplinary team responsible for advising the Agency on a range of WHS and workers compensation policy as well as Agency corporate matters. Internally, the Government Lawyer maintains strong relationships with Policy sections, Corporate Services, Data Improvement and Analysis and the People Strategies teams to provide timely and high-quality legal advice. The Legal Services section is responsible for: advising on the model WHS laws advising on matters relating to workers' compensation assisting policy teams to consider legal aspects of their policy work amending the model WHS laws advising on commercial and corporate matters, including privacy, employment law, copyright, intellectual property and freedom of information. The key duties of the position include Key Responsibilities Assist other lawyers through conducting legal research into various WHS, privacy, contracts and other legal matters. Provide legal assistance to the Agency to help achieve its policy goals, including advising on proposed amendments to the model WHS laws, associated guidance materials, the model WHS laws and workers' compensation legislation. Considering policy instructions and assisting in preparing drafting instructions for Australasian Parliamentary Counsel's Committee for amendments to the model WHS laws. Monitor case law, legal policy and legislation developments, including identifying and monitoring opportunities for amendments to the model WHS laws. Work collaboratively with Agency colleagues to assist in providing advice on issues applicable to the Agency including those arising under the Privacy Act, PGPA Act and FOI Act. Develop and maintain an understanding of the Commonwealth legal policies framework and procurement and governance requirements. Using excellent written and verbal communication skills to provide advice on administrative law matters including FOI and privacy. Assist in managing statutory oversight matters including reporting, updating policies and procedures and quality assurance over administrative decisions. Assist in guiding and mentoring others including paralegals or other staff who are new to the Agency.
