About the team The External Budgets Team leads the department's financial management and budget coordination, partnering with internal and external stakeholders-including the Department of Finance and portfolio agencies. The team is responsible for preparing key budget documents, maintaining financial systems, and supporting policy teams. Collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement are central to the team's approach, ensuring financial advice is both strategic and accessible to all areas of the department. Our ideal candidate We are seeking a proactive leader who excels at interpreting financial data and providing actionable insights. You communicate complex budget implications clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences, enabling informed decision-making across the department. You demonstrate strategic thinking, strong stakeholder engagement, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Experience in mentoring staff, fostering collaboration, and driving process enhancements is essential. Relevant qualifications in accounting, finance, or a related field are highly regarded. The key duties of the position include Lead the external budget process, focusing on interpreting and communicating the impacts of budget decisions to financial and non-financial staff. Foster productive relationships with the Department of Finance, portfolio agencies, policy teams, Chief Finance Officer Division colleagues and other stakeholders to ensure delivery of shared goals, effective budget liaison and compliance. Coordinate and manage external budget estimates for departmental and administered programs, ensuring stakeholders understand the implications. Provide expert advice and insights on budget movements, costings, and financial implications, translating technical details into clear messages for non-financial audiences. Prepare and assure the quality of financial tables and commentary for Portfolio Budget Statements (PBS), Portfolio Additional Estimates Statements (PAES), and related publications. Oversee the accuracy of financial data in the Central Budget Management System (CBMS) and other systems Manage commitments reporting, savings, offsets, and audit requirements, delivering analysis and insights tailored for non-financial stakeholders. Manage workflow, deliverables, quality and insights through development of trackers and briefings for cash management, contingency reserves, statement of risks, questions on notice, and Senate Estimates. Lead and mentor team members, promoting integrity, collaboration, professional development, and a culture of continuous improvement. Champion process improvements and best practice financial management across the branch. Other duties as directed.
