The key duties of the position include The Role The Deputy Director Engineering and Technical Assurance is the senior technical authority responsible for ensuring engineering compliance with Defence standards, policies and the Technical Regulatory Framework. This role provides governance and assurance across all strategic communications capabilities, ensuring solutions are safe, secure and sustainable. The Deputy Director Engineering and Technical Assurance oversees system design and integration, confirming interoperability, resilience and cybersecurity compliance. They manage technical risks, maintain configuration control and approve significant changes to protect safety and performance. Independent technical reviews at key milestones are led or commissioned to verify that solutions meet operational requirements and remain supportable through life. The Deputy Director Engineering and Technical Assurance also engages with stakeholders such as Capability Managers, CASG and DDG to align engineering decisions with strategic objectives. Acting as the authoritative advisor to senior leadership, they ensure technical feasibility and integrity of decisions, delivering assured capability outcomes that meet Defence operational needs. This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team Within the Joint Capabilities Group, the Defence Strategic Communication Branch (DSCB) - Modernisation, Assurance & Technical Integration (MATI) is a large and complex team of people whose mission is to provide communication system modernisation, assurance and technical integration support to DSCB, in order to ensure the provision of reliable, secure and enduring leading edge communications to the ADF. MATI's primary function is to provide service lifecycle support to in-service strategic communication systems through effective assurance, Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) functions such as change and configuration management, obsolescence and life-of-type management. Secondary Functions include: In-service systems capability modernisation / optimisation and risk reduction activities across ADF strategic communications systems; Enabling DSCB services through technical assurance and engineering support ensuring they remain reliable, operational and sustainable throughout life of type; A blended workforce of APS, ADF and Contractors design, build, test and integrate a number of coalition systems into the Defence strategic communications environment. Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for the Deputy Director Engineering and Technical Assurance is a highly experienced engineering professional with deep expertise in Defence communications systems and a strong understanding of the Defence Technical Regulatory Framework. They possess advanced knowledge of systems engineering, design assurance and integration of complex ICT and cyber-secure solutions. Proven leadership in technical governance and risk management is essential, along with the ability to conduct independent technical reviews and maintain configuration control. The candidate demonstrates exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, collaborating effectively with Capability Managers, CASG, DDG and senior leadership to align engineering decisions with strategic objectives. They are a trusted advisor who combines technical authority with strategic insight, ensuring capability outcomes are safe, secure and sustainable.
