Job Title Animal Ethics Advisor Job Description An excellent opportunity is available for an Animal Ethics Advisor to join the Ethics and Integrity Department at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. About the Position The Animal Ethics Advisor provides specialist guidance and support to ensure all animal ‐ based research at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) complies with the relevant state and national legislative and regulatory requirements and adheres to institutional frameworks and policies. Working across WEHI’s discovery-to-translation programs, the Animal Ethics Advisor interprets complex legislation to provide researchers with fit for purpose advice on proposed projects. The Animal Ethics Advisor partners with researchers to facilitate proactive risk assessments, provide expert advice on risk mitigation and guide the preparation of Animal Ethics applications. Furthermore, the Animal Ethics Advisor also conducts pre-reviews of submissions and coordinates out-of-session review of amendments and administrative changes. In addition, working with researchers and colleagues within Ethics and Integrity, the Animal Ethics Advisor drives continuous improvement of Animal Ethics systems, procedures and researcher training, ensuring WEHI policies remain current with evolving legislation and best practice. By combining expert knowledge of research processes with strong analytical and communication skills, the Animal Ethics Advisor fosters a culture of responsible and ethical research across the Institute. Selection Criteria Knowledge and Skills: A science or biomedical degree and/or relevant qualification and experience in a similar role . Demonstrated experience in animal ethics, research governance, or research compliance. Experience in the development of animal research projects , in particular, addressing the relevant ethical considerations in research planning . Sound knowledge of the Australian Code and related national and state legislation, regulation and compliance frameworks in a biomedical research setting . Strong demonstrated ability to interpret regulatory requirements and policies and convey complex information that is fit-for-purpose and actionable. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively with people across all levels in an organisation. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective training and education resources Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver continuous improvement to organisational processes Highly organised and ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines . Demonstrated proficiency with digital systems to efficiently manage information and records including ethics records and research management systems, and Microsoft 365 applications Personal Qualities: Ability to work collaboratively within a team and with colleagues across different teams to deliver outcomes . Excellent analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills with a solution-focused approach . Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines . I nitiative and sound judgement to complete tasks and resolve issues with limited supervision Ability to exercise mature judgement when dealing with sensitive issues . Terms of Appointment This position is an ongoing role in a full time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 8 ($118,099-$127,828).
