The Personal Import Scheme Explained (New Zealand Edition)
While car import brokers have been in the vehicle importing industry for years, very few have bothered to focus on the personal import market, so we get that you may not understand what makes Iron Lady Imports special.
Differences Between A Shipping Quote & An Import Estimate
If you’ve received a quote from a shipping company or freight forwarding company, you will find that our estimate is a good deal higher. Here’s why.
They’re not giving you the full picture. In most cases, shipping companies will send you their costs, but there are a number of other costs and charges associated with shipping a vehicle overseas. When looking at their quote, ask the following questions:
- Does it include assistance with the Vehicle Import Approval application?
- Does it include the charges at the Australian end?
- Does it include a duty and GST estimate? Or is that mentioned in the fine print without a figure listed?
- Does it include the additional costs necessary to get the vehicle on the road in Australia?
It is our job to help you make an informed decision, armed with all the information we can provide you before you start the process. It’s too late to back out of importing your vehicle if it is half way to Australia and you’re hit with a number of additional charges you weren’t aware were coming. Moving overseas is expensive enough without having that happen!
Registration costs. Thinking about buying a car in Australia instead? Remember that the stamp duty and registration charges we’ve listed on your estimate will also apply to any vehicle you purchase and buy locally. It will help you compare apples with apples when deciding whether to bring your own vehicle over.

Reasons to Use a Vehicle Import Broker
Your service fee also buys our experience and understanding of the vehicle import approval process, and we tailor our level of assistance to meet your individual needs.
We import hundreds of vehicles each year from various parts of the world, and often there can be complications or delays with the process, particularly from New Zealand where transit times to Australia are short. In most cases, they’re problems we’ve already seen and dealt with in the past, so we know how to fix them quickly and expediently, saving you time and money. We’ve seen many potential customers decide to go it alone, only to get ‘rescue calls’ from them later on, and it’s generally because a) they’ve considered minor difficulties to be major ones, or even worse, b) have underestimated the gravity of major problems.
Importing a vehicle to Australia or New Zealand comes with an inherent level of risk; with so many people involved in the process, there’s always potential for something to go wrong. While we can’t eliminate the risks all together, using Iron Lady Imports helps to minimise the dramas, at a time when you’re usually stressing about a million other things moving to (or back to) Australia or New Zealand.
