First Home Super Saver Scheme
Give your deposit a healthy boost
Provided you are eligible, the First Home Super Saver (FHSS) Scheme allows you to contribute up to a maximum of $15,000 in a financial year and a maximum of $30,000 in total. You can withdraw this amount (plus earnings, less tax) to buy your first home. Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis. This means that couples, siblings or friends can each access their own eligible FHSS contributions from their super to purchase the same property. The individual-based limits give couples the chance to save up to $60,000 using the scheme over two financial years. Contributions include before-tax contributions such as salary sacrifice, and after-tax contributions.
Because you’re saving through super, you’ll likely pay less tax than saving outside super, which generally means you can build a bigger deposit more quickly. If you’re a couple, you can both use the scheme so you could double the amount you save.
Can I apply?
You can apply if:
If you transfer an amount into WA Super from a KiwiSaver scheme, the KiwiSaver amount can generally be used for an eligible FHSSS contribution, except if the amounts transferred from a KiwiSaver scheme are Australian-sourced amounts or returning New Zealand-sourced amounts (that is, amounts that have previously been reported by an Australian superannuation fund to the ATO).
Eligibility requirements to apply for release from your super fund include:
- you’ve never owned a property in Australia;
- you’re 18 or older when you withdraw your money; and
- you haven’t previously received a First Home Super Saver payment.
You may still be eligible, even if you have previously owned property in Australia, if the ATO determines you have suffered financial hardship.
Applications to withdraw the money as a FHSSS amount are made to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
