New Zealanders Are Moving To Australia In Record Numbers…Again

The number of people moving across the Tasman is rising, meaning that the population gains from migration are falling fast

Back in 2012, the number of people moving from New Zealand to Australia was exceeding those coming from across the Tasman by more than 40,000 a year.

In 2018 New Zealand is once again losing more people to Australia

A pick-up in the number of Kiwis heading across the Tasman has Treasury warning that falling migration could become a drag on growth.

Indicators from a few reliable sources are proving that the trend of Kiwis relocating to Australia is back in demand and growing fast.

NZRelo – The Home of Kiwis in Australia reports an increase of 22% in website traffic to our ‘Moving to Auz’ section in the last 8 weeks alone, that’s 27,000 weekly visitors learning about living in OZ from NZ – producing an over whelming 4000 relocation contact enquiries per month.

The Employment Area of NZRelo with over 100k Australian job listings ‘like Seek’ is receiving 1200 NZ based job seekers per day and 220 Job Alert setups from NZ per day.

The popular FB group ‘Kiwis in Aussie’ with 72,000 members, has reported a staggering 1958 pending requests awaiting approval to the group, 95% of the requests are from NZ based FB users. Sue Materman from (KIA & NZRelo) is run off her feet with the increase in demand for information.

The monthly economic indicators reported by  Treasury said that the population gains from net migration still remained strong, but were falling more quickly than predicted in May’s Budget.

After peaking at an annual gain of 72,500 in the year to July 31, 2017, an all-time high, the annual gain dropped to 63,779 in the year to the end of July 2018.

“Recent declines have been driven, in part, by a pick-up in departures to Australia, which have started to rise above arrivals from Australia,” Treasury said.

Despite record gains from net migration in 2016 and 2017, for a brief time more people were moving from Australia to New Zealand than the other way around, something which had not been seen since the 1990s.

Treasury warned that migration gains were falling more quickly than assumed, and this could contribute to lower than expected growth for NZ
