About the role The diversional therapist will work under guidance to develop and implement individual and group activity programs to engage patients in meaningful and purposeful activity, driven by an atmosphere of full inclusion, and the unique interests, preferences and capabilities of patients. This is to support and enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing of patients on the inpatient hospital ward at Calvary Health Care Bethlehem. Many patients on the ward experience significant cognitive, communication and physical disability.
A passion for improving the quality of life for patients with complex disability will be core to this role. Patients include individuals with progressive neurological conditions (including Motor Neurone Disease and Huntington’s Disease) and other neurological and palliative medical conditions. The team includes nurses, neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, music therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, pastoral care, speech pathologists, dieticians, pharmacists, volunteers and doctors who work with patient improve the quality of life of people with life limiting conditions.
The multidisciplinary team find caring for this complex patient group very rewarding. What you bring Cert III/IV or Diploma in Leisure and Lifestyle, Diversional Therapy or, Disability support or Allied Health Assistant. Demonstrated passion and empathy for the needs of patients with complex disability (patients with physical/communication/cognitive disabilities) Ability to engage patients in meaningful and purposeful activities based on their unique interests, preferences and capabilities of patients Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise in a flexible and adaptable way Ability to work as part of an inter-disciplinary team Ability to adapt and respond to patients’ needs Personal interests/skills in creative applications in arts (visual, performing and literary) and health, and/or recreation and leisure Benefits This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of a leading mission based health care organisation.
