Associate to the Honourable Justice Kaye, Court of Appeal Supreme Court of Victoria The Supreme Court of Victoria (the Court) is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts. Judges in the Court are supported by Associates who assist in the management and coordination of the Judge's judicial, court management, administrative and legal research responsibilities.

Justice Kaye is seeking a legally qualified individual, with a minimum of two years' relevant professional experience to be his associate commencing 3 August 2020. His Honour sits on both civil and criminal applications and appeals in the Court of Appeal and one term per year in the Trial Division hearing criminal trials. The role presents an exciting opportunity to work both in the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division.

The successful applicant will have the chance to gain valuable experience in the appellate environment, and to closely observe the work of advocates and the judiciary. The position will be for a term of 12-18 months. Strong research, writing and typing skills, proficiency in grammar and a strong academic record are essential.

The duties of an Associate are detailed in the attached position description but specifically include: assist in the management and coordination of the Judge's judicial and administrative responsibilities; preparing research memoranda, case summaries and proofreading and editing judgments; clerking in Court, using courtroom technology to ensure proceedings are transcribed and technological aids are readily available to counsel; providing administrative assistance to the Judge during hearings and in chambers; manage the Judge's chambers; and accompanying the Judge to circuit courts in regional Victoria, as and when required. The role requires a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism as you will be working closely with judicial officers, court staff and legal practitioners. To be successful in the role of Associate to the Judge you will possess the following: demonstrated understanding of legal principle; interpersonal and communication skills to confidently and accurately convey information over the telephone, in writing and in person to members of the legal profession, the public and the media; organisational and problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment; computer literacy and administrative experience.
