This remote and unique Shire, with a permanent population of 350 people has two main townships, Burketown and Gregory.

Burke Shire is an area of strong natural and cultural heritage. The Shire is home to Boodjamulla National Park and the World Heritage Site Riversleigh fossil fields as well as to some of Australia's most spectacular natural resources including world class Barramundi fishing, an abundance of bird life and (well fed) crocodiles. From Winter to Spring, a rare meteorological phenomenon known as Morning Glory can be observed in the skies above Burke Shire, as long, tubular clouds stretch up to 1000km in length.
