Details of Department The Department of General Medicine is part of the Medical Services Division. It is a large clinical unit that aims to continuously provide expert quality care to inpatients and outpatients of Austin Health. General Medicine admits patients to: its 68 inpatient beds (Wards 7 East and 7 West) Emergency Medicine and Short Stay Unit, which are both located in the Emergency Department Ward 10 on the Repatriation Campus.
The typical General Medical patient has multiple and complex medical problems that require simultaneous management. In addition, General Medicine also cares for patients with single medical problems that require specialist management, but which are not clearly within the domain of other sub-specialties. General Medicine also plays a key role in the supervision of perioperative medical problems.
The Department is staffed by Consultant Physicians in General Medicine, many of whom also have an additional subspecialty qualification such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Renal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Clinical Pharmacology etc. These consultants supervise Advanced and Basic Physician Trainees and more junior doctors to provide comprehensive medical care. The medical staff of General Medicine are also key players in the multi-disciplinary management that characterises modern care of complex medical patients.
Thus, General Medicine consultants will coordinate the contributions of other medical disciplines and work closely with allied health personnel including Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Nutritionists and Care Coordinators. The Department of General Medicine has important roles in research and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is closely affiliated with The University of Melbourne.
