The School of BioSciences (Faculty of Science) at The University of Melbourne seeks to appoint a new Director for the Centre for Aquatic Pollution Identification and Management (CAPIM) to establish a world-class, multi-disciplinary applied biological sciences research program, with a strong emphasis on improving and maintaining water quality for aquatic ecosystem biodiversity and function, as well as human health. Founded in 2009, CAPIM is a highly productive applied research centre at the University of Melbourne, with a mission to provide novel biological solutions that address societal challenges in sustainable water management. CAPIM also has a strong reputation with stakeholders external to the University and maintains effective research partnerships with industries, government departments and agencies to inform strategies for water and pollution management.
The new Director will provide strong academic leadership to CAPIM and oversee a research program that focuses on biological approaches to aquatic pollution identification and management. She/he will engage with researchers in BioSciences, the wider Faculty and across other Faculties (e.g.
Melbourne School of Engineering) to ensure that CAPIM plays a key role in the Universityâ€™s overall research objective of improving water security and sustainability. The appointee will drive innovative cross-disciplinary research that has the potential to translate to changes in aquatic pollution identification and management. They will be expected to attract research funding from nationally competitive grant schemes and secure major funding bids in collaboration with industry.
They will also seek to develop new research partnerships with industry in Victoria and Australia, and enhance collaborative opportunities for CAPIM internationally. The new Director will contribute to graduate research training in CAPIM, with an emphasis on developing new opportunities for postgraduate researchers to integrate with industry. She/he will also provide leadership to the early and mid-career researchers located in CAPIM.
The appointee will be a well-respected leader within the profession, with an excellent academic record in aquatic biological sciences research, and substantial experience in partnering with government and industry to achieve research outcomes. She/he will have demonstrated expertise and capacity to lead diverse teams, and shape and build the future of sustainable water pollution management with a strong emphasis on improving and maintaining water quality.
