Select Oyster Company P/LOverview of Board duties and desirable attributesSelect Oyster Company P/L (SOCo) is a not for profit wholly owned subsidiary of NSW Farmers Association whose function is to manage the selective breeding program and distribution of selectively bred Sydney Rock Oysters. Incorporated in 2004, its aim is to commercialise the research phase of the selective breeding program, managed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries.The Boards Directors serve in a voluntary capacity and one member is also a NSW Farmers Association Oyster Committee member.

The NSW Farmers Associations GM, Finance and Operation hold the position of Company Secretary and is a member of the SOCo Board. The Board operates according to a Constitution and is covered by product and private liability. The Board of Directors is a group of dedicated volunteers who contribute to the operation, management & growth of the company.

The Board maintains regular contact via email, and meets by monthly teleconference. Impromptu meetings may be called where necessary. Annual face to face meetings are usually held in Sydney.

Agenda papers are circulated by email prior to meetings. Items for Board meetings are generated from the Boards own deliberations. The Boards activities include:Liaison with NSW DPI Fisheries to facilitate informed guidance of the relevance and commercialisation of the Sydney Rock Oyster breeding program on behalf of industryDirecting the companys Operations Manager through regular email and phone calls where necessary, and review of the Managers monthly progress reportsCommunicating with industry about Sydney Rock Oyster breeding program, stock performance and stock availability where requiredCommunicating with industry about company initiatives including rebate systems, hatchery production runs, broodstock management and other information published on the company websiteResponding to inquiries from industry bodies such as state government departments, funding bodies, research and policy advisory committees where requiredRepresenting SOCo at meetings, conferences or other industry events as necessaryKeeping informed of relevant industry news, events, funding opportunities and research and circulating such information to the Board as requiredInterested parties would be required to demonstrate an understanding of the areas listed below.

Skills and experience in any or all these areas would be highly regarded.Aquaculture, and the oyster industry and associated product processesOyster hatchery and nursery management and productionDeveloping research and development proposalsCommercialisation of breeding programs in shellfish or other species/industriesProject managementFinancial managementExperience in designing and delivering genetic breeding programs in shellfish or other industries, stakeholder management, government liaison and marketing would be highly regarded. Previous experience on boards is preferable but not essential.
