Director of Public Engagement Expertise in the audience development Proven leadership at the Executive level Senior Executive Band 1 – Ongoing Employment Location: Sydney The Art Gallery of New South Wales (the Gallery) is an executive agency under the Department of Planning and Environment. It holds significant collections of Indigenous, Australian and International art; presents a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions involving significant loans from Australian and international collections; and manages the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills. The Gallery employs up to 350 people on an annual basis and has a current effective full-time equivalent of around 200 staff.
As the state’s leading institution for the visual arts, the Gallery plays a vital role in the cultural and intellectual life of both Sydney and Australia. Primary purpose of the role The Gallery is seeking an experienced leader to drive and implement the strategic direction of the Gallery’s engagement with audiences (onsite, online and regionally), advocating new approaches to public and education access programs, visitor engagement and strategic community partnerships aligned with the Gallery’s strategic vision and plan to achieve its audience-engagement objectives. The role provides leadership for the development of the Gallery’s exhibition and audience programs to create opportunities and experiences that inspire, stimulate and drive repeat visitation.
Role status This constitutes term employment under section 34 the Government Sector Employment Act 2013, and the role is based in Sydney. Essential requirements Experience and demonstrated success at an executive level leading a division delivering audience engagement, educative and creative programs within the arts, culture and educational disciplines. Related qualifications or comparable industry experience Ability to proactively anticipate risks and develop and implement innovative and timely solutions to resolve issues.
