Volunteer - Gardening Group
Oakfield Lodge, 15 Hawthorn Road, Mount Barker, SA 5251 Southern Cross Care are looking for volunteers with a love of gardening and an empathy for people with dementia to assist residents within our memory support garden at Oakfield Lodge, Mount Barker. Research has shown that access to a garden can improve attention, relaxation and self-esteem. Positive memories of one’s past can be stimulated by being exposed to the sights and smells of nature such as plants, flowers, birds, water and insects.
Spending time wandering through a dementia-friendly garden, tending to plants or simply admiring a flower requires effortless attention, providing relief from physically and emotionally draining experiences, and an opportunity to recharge. Days and times are flexible and support for volunteers would be provided by the site’s Lifestyle Coordinator who has a wealth of knowledge around dementia. This volunteer position would best suit those with a passion for active ageing, clear communication skills, patience and empathy.
All volunteers require a police certificate for the purposes of Aged Care. If you are looking for a rewarding voluntary opportunity to help people live a better life, we would love to hear from you..
