APSAbout our team Group Manager Legal | Security Disputes & Operations Law | National Security Legal Section Legal Group is responsible for delivering high quality in-house legal services to the Department of Home Affairs (including the Australian Border Force), and providing strategic legal advice and support to its Executive and Ministers. Legal Group actively manages legal risk for a variety of public sector issues. The work of Legal Group is fast paced, dynamic covers a range of areas including national security law, commercial law, employment law, migration and citizenship law, customs law and practice management.
The Department manages the largest litigation caseload in the Commonwealth, and its matters are at the cutting edge of administrative and public law. Legal Group also manages a large and dynamic legislative reform agenda and has its own in-house legal training program which supports staff to develop and expand their knowledge and skills. Legal Group has over 250 staff and six different branches, giving Senior Legal Officers the opportunity to rotate through various sections to develop their legal skill set.
A rotation program is specifically offered for Senior Legal Officers which allows them to rotate to different positions subject to occupational demands. Additionally, Senior Legal Officers are supported to build their skills through offering various opportunities including acting opportunities, on-the-job training, access to in-house monthly legal seminars and sponsored workshops and courses. The key duties of the position include Duties and responsibilities Providing legal advice to support policy, program or operational functions relating to various Acts including (amongst others) the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018, Auscheck Act 2007, Counter-Terrorism (Temporary Exclusion Orders) Act 2019, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979, and parts of the Telecommunications Act 1997 insofar as it relates to powers of the Minister for Home Affairs.
The advice is frequently on high profile, complex, technical or sensitive issues. The advice will be based on effective case law research and principles of statutory interpretation and good administrat.
