Telescope Operator/Technician

Itelesccope.Net has an exciting high-tech opportunity for a Telescope Operator/Technician at it's Siding Spring Observatory Coonabarabran. Main Duties Diagnose and repair telescopes.

Provide observatory support which includes fault rectification, diagnosis for both telescope systems and IT systems that support the telescopes. Maintain the calibration library to ensure high standards are met. Plan and conduct systems and routine tests, monitoring trends, and correcting anomalies.

Perform troubleshooting and problem analysis. Maintain the network of telescopes to ensure the telescopes' reliability and quality imaging data. Physically install telescopes at Siding Spring / Coonabarabran and complete telescope software installations.

Update the technical specs of each telescope on the support website. Develop procedures, schedules, and spare parts lists for maintenance and repair of telescope systems. Liaise with hosting customers and respond to any support requests.

Implement and maintain tests, calibrations, and maintenance procedures on equipment. Implement procedures for basic quality control and failure analysis. Relevant Qualifications Certificate IV or Diploma in Engineering or Electronic Communications but 5 years or more experience as Telescope Operator / Technician may substitute.

Essential Skills Knowledge of basic orbital mechanics. Knowledge of spectral analysis ranging from Ultraviolet to Infrared and the Visible Spectrum. Knowledge of how to acquire and track satellites.

Knowledge of various camera and optical systems and their configurations. Ability to align, test, and calibrate research-grade optical instruments. Ability to diagnose and repair system faults over a network.

Ability to determine whether a site is a viable option for a specific instrument. Ability to work more than 10 meters about the ground. Proven track record of spectrograph analysis and instruction.

Planetary imaging skills. Employment Experience At least 5 years of relevant experience operating a myriad of telescope optical systems and solar telescopes at professional observatories Experience with 1.5 to 2.

5 meters telescopes Proven electrical, optical, mechanical and IT skills to support telescope systems, including interfaces to instrumentation, software applications, and operating systems. Preferably with experience in scientific and technical imaging. Proven skills at short- and long-term planning including project management, keeping to plans and deadlines ? Track record of problem analysis and resolution.

Experience with working with hazardous materials/voltage. Experienced documentation preparation and control. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
